QuickBooks Web Connect vs Direct Connect
QuickBooks Desktop offers two ways to get bank transactions in: Web Connect and Direct Connect (also called Express Web Connect). Understanding which you're using matters because the error messages and fixes differ.
Web Connect is the manual process: you download a .qbo file from your bank's website, then import it via File → Utilities → Import → Web Connect Files. You control which date range to import. Errors are file-format related — wrong INTU.BID, QFX instead of QBO, corrupt file.
Direct Connect (Express Web Connect) is the automated process: QuickBooks connects to your bank directly using your banking credentials, downloads transactions automatically on a schedule. Errors are usually credential or bank configuration issues, not file format issues.
If you downloaded a file from your bank's website and are trying to import it manually, you are using Web Connect. File format errors — 'can't read the file' — are Web Connect errors. QBOConvert fixes Web Connect file format issues.

Choosing between Web Connect and Direct Connect
- If your bank supports Direct Connect and you want automatic daily downloads: set up Direct Connect in QuickBooks (Banking → Bank Feeds → Set Up Bank Feed).
- If your bank only offers file download (QFX, OFX, QBO): use Web Connect. Convert as needed with QBOConvert.
- If Direct Connect is showing errors: check bank credentials and whether your bank requires a separate OFX access token.
- For historical imports beyond what Direct Connect fetches: use Web Connect to import older .qbo files.
Questions
Does my bank support Direct Connect?
Check your bank's online banking help for 'QuickBooks Direct Connect' or 'Express Web Connect'. Major banks generally support it. Credit unions and smaller banks often offer only Web Connect file download.
Which is more reliable?
Web Connect is more predictable — you control exactly which transactions are imported. Direct Connect is more convenient but depends on your bank maintaining its OFX server connection.
