Import bank transactions into QuickBooks Desktop via Web Connect
QuickBooks Desktop's Web Connect import lets you download transaction history from your bank and bring it into QuickBooks without manual data entry. The process involves downloading a .qbo file from your bank and importing it via File → Utilities → Import → Web Connect Files.
Requirements: the file must be .qbo format; it must contain a valid INTU.BID matching QuickBooks's institution database; and it must not be corrupt or truncated. If your bank provides QFX or OFX files, convert them first.
After import, QuickBooks presents each transaction for review in the Banking Center. You match transactions to existing register entries or create new ones. The first import from a new bank may require setting up the account association — this is a one-time step.

Step-by-step Web Connect import
- Download the .qbo file from your bank. If you received .qfx or .ofx, convert with QBOConvert first.
- In QuickBooks Desktop: File → Utilities → Import → Web Connect Files.
- Browse to the .qbo file. QuickBooks reads it and matches INTU.BID to your bank.
- On first import: select 'Use an existing QuickBooks account' and choose your bank account. On subsequent imports this step is skipped.
- Review imported transactions in the Banking Center. Match or create corresponding register entries.
- Accept reviewed transactions. They move to your register.
Questions
How far back can I import?
As far back as your bank keeps downloadable history — typically 90 days to 2 years. If you need older data, some banks offer extended history downloads on request.
Why are my transactions duplicated?
Overlapping date ranges cause duplicates. QuickBooks's duplicate detection helps, but if you import the same period twice, review the Banking Center carefully before accepting all transactions.
Can I import multiple accounts in one QBO file?
Standard bank QBO files contain one account. If you need to import multiple accounts, download separate QBO files for each account and import them individually.
